We are the implementation arm of the International Association for Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) on inclusive insurance. We generate and disseminate knowledge, build capacity, contribute to IAIS standard-setting, promote learning & dialogues, support regional & country implementation and get involved in global advocacy processes.
We advocate for inclusive insurance as a development tool in national and international processes such as the G20. We also disseminate knowledge and build awareness on the development of inclusive insurance markets.
OUR MISSION
As implementation partner of the IAIS, we strengthen the capacity and understanding of supervisors to facilitate the promotion of inclusive and responsible insurance, thereby reducing vulnerability.
OUR VISION
More poor and vulnerable people have access to, and use affordable insurance appropriate for their needs.
OUR CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS
We are the thought leader on inclusive insurance regulation and supervision.
We build supervisory capacities to promote inclusive insurance.
We help create a supportive policy environment for inclusive insurance.
Our funding and internal operations support our mission and vision.
OUR THEORY OF CHANGE
The Access to Insurance Initiative helps to establish effective insurance markets around the world in order to improve lives, strengthen communities and grow economies.
The challenge: In many parts of the world, people and businesses live and operate without the security of insurance. When loss strikes, it does not discriminate between the rich and poor, or the developed or developing world. Yet too often, regulators and supervisors do not have the technical knowledge to establish an effective insurance framework which enhances access for all, insurance providers may not see a compelling business opportunity to offer products to the low-income population, and there is a lack of understanding of the benefits of insurance to individuals and companies.
The solution: The protections offered by insurance help safeguard against unexpected loss and minimise risk, whether for the well-being of a household, the operations of a business or the health of a community. A financially sound insurance sector contributes to economic growth and well-being by supporting the management of risk, allocation of resources, and mobilisation of long-term savings. The Access to Insurance Initiative (A2ii) is addressing this need by working with policymakers, regulators and insurance supervisors to implement solutions which increase insurance access. A2ii also seeks to ensure that low-income people understand the value of insurance, and then help supervisors and regulators structure the market with the end goal of poverty reduction and economic development.
RESULTS AND LEARNING
We strive for impact in all our work. We aim to ensure that the regulatory frameworks in the countries and regions we support provide space for insurance providers to offer insurance to groups previously excluded while ensuring the protection of consumers.
We also monitor our progress through the IAIS/A2ii self-assessment on financial inclusion, the expansion of access to insurance by the low-income population, and A2ii’s performance as an organisation with a long-term mission.
