Watch the UNSGSA Queen Máxima Video Remarks on Access to Insurance and Financial Inclusion

2020 has seen the undoing of much of the development progress made so far and the further widening of the protection gap. More resilient communities – with stronger safety nets and healthcare – are faring better. Women, MSMEs and the informally employed, people dependent on tourism and remittances, rural communities with less hospital access, are worse-off.

The repercussions of the global pandemic on people’s lives and economies have reignited the discussions around the role of insurance in sustainable development efforts and the 2030 Agenda. It is along nine SDGs that insurance can have the most impact and play an important role: No Poverty, Reduced Inequalities, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, Climate Change and Partnerships for the Goals.

The SDGs represent the common language for setting aspirations and alignment among the insurance industry, supervisors and policymakers. More work therefore needs to be done to widen the insurance vocabulary and articulate how insurance can support sustainable development.

Join us in discussing these topics on 22 April 2021 at the A2ii-IAIS Public Dialogue on Insurance and the SDGs

To open the event, H.M. Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, United Nations Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA), will provide a pre-recorded video for the keynote address. This will be followed by key messages from the IAIS delivered by Peter Braumüller, Chair of the A2ii and IAIS Implementation and Assessment Committee. We will then hear from a panel of experts including:

  • Susan Holliday, Senior Advisor, International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group
  • Garance Wattez-Richard, CEO, AXA Emerging Customers
  • Craig Churchill, Chief of the Social Finance Programme & Team Leader, ILO's Impact Insurance Facility
  • Christiaan Henning, Senior Insurance Analyst, South-African Reserve Bank

The panel discussion will be moderated by Hannah Grant, Head of Secretariat, Access to Insurance Initiative and Conor Donaldson, Head of Implementation, IAIS.
