Capacity Building for Insurance Supervisors - Leveraging Actuarial Skills - 2023

Event report:

The training took place from 21 to 30 November 2023, with a combination of online self-paced modules and live sessions, which include a range of lecture-based sessions, case studies, breakout sessions and quizzes. Around 30 supervisors from Sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean attended. The training aims at strengthening the understanding and implementation of the actuarial concepts and tools necessary to support effective insurance supervision and regulation.  

Topics covered included risk management, valuation reports, reinsurance, risk-based capital, as well as key performance indicators to monitor for risk-based solvency.  

 

The sessions were taught by Jeff Blacker, Norma A. Rosas, Eamon Kelly, Christiaan Ahlers, Britta Hay and Elias Omondi. Participants were also joined by Peter Windsor, who gave a presentation on IFRS 17 and Jooste Steynberg, who presented on the activities of the Risk Based Solvency Implementation Forum.

We are pleased to invite you to the virtual training Capacity building for insurance supervisors: leveraging actuarial skills organised by the International Actuarial Association (IAA), the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and the Access to Insurance Initiative (A2ii).

This training targets supervisors from Africa and the Caribbean. It aims at strengthening the understanding and implementation of the actuarial concepts and tools necessary to support effective insurance supervision and regulation. 

The approach of this training will be on learning principles, while being as simple and practical as possible. The training takes place from 21 to 30 November 2023, with a combination of online self-paced modules and live sessions, which include a range of lecture-based sessions, case studies, breakout sessions and quizzes.

The training will be held in English.

 

Requirements

The programme has two required components that you must complete to earn your certificate:

  1. Self-paced learning modules on the Connect.A2ii learning platform

  2. Live Sessions with trainers and experts on Tuesday, 31 October 2023 and on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two weeks in November: 21, 23, 28, and 30 November 2023

Plan to dedicate a total of 12 hours to live sessions and around 8 hours for the self-paced modules.

The live sessions are based on the following components:

Week 1 – Insurer Failure and Risk Based Capital 
Week 2 – Valuation and Actuarial Reports

The modules will be accessible on the Connect.A2ii platform, and the live sessions will take place on MS Teams.

The training is offered at no cost to insurance supervisors, however, places will be limited. Approximately 2 supervisors per jurisdiction will be selected. The deadline to register your interest is  11 October.

Please note: the programme is for insurance supervisors only.

There are no tuition fees to attend the training. 

 

Target audience 

This training is directed towards mid to high level technical staff of regulation and supervision agencies from Africa and the Caribbean, ideally with a minimum of three years' experience in the insurance industry. The course is not directed towards qualified actuaries, however, participants will need reasonable mathematic skills. 

Please apply as soon as possible if you are interested. During participant selection, regional diversity will be taken into consideration.

As this is a virtual training, for supervisors wishing to participate from other regions, please register your interest and we will contact you depending on available spaces. 

Participants will receive a certificate upon completion.
